CALCULATION OF GRADING POINTS

On 14^th April 2014, British Showjumping changed from awarding notional prize money to a points based system for the purpose of grading horses.

In respect of horse classes, no grading points are recorded for classes up to 0.85cm in height.   Thereafter points are allocated on placings, based on the 1:5 starters ratio, and double clear rounds are also rewarded: (See Appendix 1)

Also, with effect from 14^th April all horses registered with British Showjumping had their notional money winnings converted to points on a 1:1 basis and the grading limits for National Championships were increased to reflect the achievement of double clears within the system.

Furthermore, British Showjumping introduced three NEW regional league tables where horse and rider combinations’ points are recorded on a regional basis with the opportunity for leading riders in each region to compete for a place in the league finals to be held at the Horse of the Year show (see Appendix 2)

 

GRADING LEVELS IN THE CHANNEL ISLANDS

Following discussions with our BS Area representative, Anne Newbury and our counterparts in Jersey it was agreed that we review the grading system, points limits and levels for the Channel Islands

There are a number of benefits associated with this, specifically:

• BSJA Jersey and BS Guernsey being more closely aligned to our parent organisation

• Creation of a level playing field between Guernsey and Jersey with horses being graded and winnings recorded in the same way

• The opportunity for those local members who are also National members of BS to have their results recorded and entered in appropriate league table results with the possibility of qualification for the Horse of the Year Show

• Complete transparency on horses’ winnings whether gained in the Channel Islands or UK so that there is no confusion when importing, exporting or taking horses to the UK or Jersey to compete

Traditionally, when horses and ponies have been imported from the UK, Jersey have divided the notional prize money by three, but Guernsey have taken full notional winnings. Both Islands have for upgrading purposes have been using considerably lower monetary levels than that of the UK.

 

HORSES:

Upon discussion with Anne and representatives of BSJA Jersey, we have agreed the following horse upgrading levels:

Restricted Grade C     0 – 125 points

Open Grade C             0 – 374 points

Grade B                       375 – 699 points

Grade A                      700 points plus

 

These points equate to those limits for National Championships, i.e.

British Novice              not to have won a total of 125 points

Newcomers                not to have won a total of 375 points

Foxhunter                    not to have won a total of 700 points

 

NB: these limits have been increased by BS to reflect points awarded for Double Clears.

With effect from 27^th May 2014 all points currently awarded to Guernsey registered horses / ponies recorded winnings will be measured using the same system as in the UK. {i.e. 1:1 basis}

With the amended grading limits it may be that some horses and ponies will be downgraded. Those affected by this will be given the choice of remaining in their higher grade should they so wish BUT once the decision is made it is not reversible.

 

PONIES:

At present, there are no similar leagues for ponies, however both Jersey and Guernsey clubs have agreed to review the grading levels and align them as follows:

JD                    0 – 150 points
JC                    151- 300 points
JA                    301 points plus

In discussions with Ann Newbury it was agreed that the local limits for grading purposes being recommended may be subject to change in future years if deemed necessary but this would be in consultation with our Jersey counterparts.

LEVELS

but essentially, these leagues are as follows:

 

GOLD

A national league reflecting results for horse/rider combinations who have winning or double clears at 1.30m and above.

 

SILVER

A regional league tables consisting of points awarded to National members competing in all classes with 1^st round heights between 1.10 – 1.30m

 

BRONZE

A regional league tables consisting of points awarded to National members competing in all classes with 1^st round heights between 0.90 – 1.10m
